Technical lecture on the design and fabrication of feature staircases

Feature staircases present a rare opportunity for engineering to take centre stage, with the structure on show rather than hidden away in the partitions.

They can take a whole range of imaginative forms and often incorporate slender profiles and long cantilevers to meet architectural aspirations. Engineering a successful stair requires a detailed understanding of vibration and connection design, as well as an appreciation for architectural metalwork and the craftmanship involved in fabricating large steelwork structures.

Arup and Taunton Fabrications have worked together on several unique stair designs combining their expertise in structural design and architectural metalwork. After giving an overview of the topic and some key considerations, Ewan and Phil will tell the story of the Halo Stair – their most ambitious design yet!

This seven-storey helical stair cantilevers six meters from the floorplate, appearing to float through a full-height atrium with no central support. The talk will cover the full lifecycle of the project from concept design through to fabrication and installation.

Speakers

Ewan Macpherson - Arup

Ewan studied Civil, Structural and Environmental engineering at the University of Cambridge before joining Arup’s Winchester office as a structural engineer.

In collaboration with Taunton Fabrications, Ewan has designed over 12 feature staircases including one in his old sixth form college! His interests are in parametric design for unusual geometries and collaborating with fabrication teams to optimise steelwork designs.

Phil Harris - Taunton Fabrications

Phil has worked within the Architectural and Structural Steel Industry for 25 years.

His interests are in solving the numerous aesthetic and structural issues that arise during the collaborative Design process. His main areas of expertise are feature staircases, cantilevering balconies and bespoke stair balustrading.

Always up for a challenge, Phil has particularly enjoyed collaborating with the Arup team over the past three to four years, where their parametric design expertise has really benefitted the Design process.
