Practicing the art of structural engineering – i.e. designing elegantly, efficiently and economically, is one thing. Doing it competently and safely – and avoiding the pitfalls and bear traps, and staying in business – is quite another matter because things do go wrong.
This presentation is based on an analysis of several hundred Expert Witness reports done in the last 20 years. It highlights themes and trends, and deals with recurring issues and lessons to be learned.
The presentation concludes with the emphasis on the costs incurred when something goes wrong and how the only winner is the legal profession. It emphasises the need for increasing competence.
