Carl Brookes of Ramboll will present recent work on the assessment of masonry arch structures on the rail network undertaken using advanced Finite Discrete Element Modelling (FDEM).

The application of FDEM to masonry structures allows the fundamental behaviour of masonry to be modelled.  It provides increased confidence in the assessment, particularly of more complex structures, and can often demonstrate increased strength compared to conventional empirically based approaches.  It also enables the interaction of masonry with other structural elements to be accurately modelled thereby enabling non-standard configurations and strengthening solutions to be assessed with much greater confidence that conventional approaches allow. 

The presentation will also cover the development of this approach and the work done to verify its application.  

Carl is a member of the steering panel for the ERMABI (Exploiting the Resilience of Masonry Arch Bridge Infrastructure) research project comprising teams from the Universities of Sheffield, Leeds and Imperial College and will also include an update on this. 

The presentation is live and interactive with the opportunity to ask questions at the end of the presentation.

Carl Brookes is a Director at Ramboll and leads Ramboll’s Engineering Simulation Team.

He is an expert in performance-based design and assessment with considerable experience in construction analysis of bridges and tall buildings; non-linear simulation of concrete and masonry; special structural assessment and testing; analysis of historic structures; dynamic analysis of structures (vibration, earthquake, collision, blast); and structural monitoring.
