Speakers

Ruth Haynes MA MEng FICE CEng
Ruth is Associate Director of Structures within Bureau Veritas Building Control, with over 25 years of experience in the construction industry. Ruth is a Chartered Engineer, Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and lead author of the Institution of Structural Engineers Guidance on Robustness and Disproportionate Collapse.
Ruth worked for large and small engineering consultancies, doing the design of building structures. She started her career at Buro Happold where she was involved with the Newbury Headquarters for Vodafone, first as a design engineer and then as the Resident Engineer on site. She started her own company in 2005, designing bespoke new homes.  Ruth moved into Building Control 5 years ago, designing and implementing structural checking procedures and checking structural submissions for small and large buildings, including buildings over 40 storeys.
Having been within Building Control during the post Grenfell reforms and the publication of the Building Safety Act, she is currently in a good position to lead Bureau Veritas in the review of Safety Case Reports for occupied Higher Risk Buildings for the Building Safety Regulator.
Ruth also sits on the joint ICE/IStructE committee looking at the registration of engineers to work on Higher Risk Buildings.

Mats Syversen BEng MSc
Mats is a Senior Engineer within the engineering team of Bureau Veritas Building Control.  He is a talented engineer who has led on many new systems within the recently formed team and has much experience working with the Building Safety Regulator on Gateway 2 submissions and the checking of Safety Case Reports for the Building Safety Regulator.
Mats has great insight on Construction Control Plans, Fire and Emergency Plans and Compliance Statements, and the legislation.  This puts him in a great position to talk about Gateway 2.
After graduating from City St George’s and Queen Mary University of London, Mats worked at RSA design, cutting his teeth on a variety of bespoke projects, typical of small, nimble consultancies.  He then went to work at Mason Navarro Pledge and honed his skills of designing large buildings.  He has detailed knowledge of design and analysis of buildings.
