Trimble Industry Workshop: Comprehensive Slab Deflection Calculations (Partner Event)

This is a partner event organised by Trimble and supported by The Institution of Structural Engineers.

A rigorous approach encompassing construction events and other TR58 requirements.

Predicting deflections in concrete flat slabs has become an increasingly regular requirement in recent years. The Concrete Society Technical Report No 58 is regarded as the pre-eminent guidance on this topic. This introduces many challenges, not least of which is the need to consider the development of deflections through a series of construction loading events. Consequently slab deflection is a complex subject and this workshop aims to discuss much of the detail that lies behind the calculations and demonstrate how this has been automated in Tekla Structural Designer whilst retaining transparency to dig into the detail when required.
  • Session 1 - 9:30 - 10:30
Estimating long term deflections in slabs
Dr Stuart Gale will discuss the need for sequential load analysis when estimating long term deflections in slabs. Detail from TR58 will be introduced and the concept of events discussed, how every event should be considered in detail and how software can offer a robust solution. He will also present the overall analysis process in Tekla Structural Designer.
  • Session 2 - 10:30 - 11:15
Slab Deflection Workflow
During this session Kenny Arnott will explain the practical method of slab deflection checking including how to set user limits and create check lines. He will go on to discuss expectations and the realistic perspective required on accuracy. Calculation sensitivities and the studies done using a credible range of values for all of the input parameters involved in a rigorous approach will be considered.
  • Session 3 - 11:15 - 12:15
Practical demonstration
In the final session Stuart Campbell will bring together the concepts discussed throughout the morning and demonstrate how these are dealt with in Tekla Structural Designer and how quick and simple the procedure can be.
