The use of Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) is a growing trend worldwide.
Benefits include the enhancement of construction quality, productivity, safety and minimising the environmental impact by reducing construction waste, air and noise pollution generated in traditional construction activities.
Building Department (BD) has formulated streamlined measures and guidelines to help the industry adopt MiC system which has been examined under the pre-acceptance approval process for construction projects in Hong Kong under Buildings Ordinance.
Various structural design considerations on the module and the overall modular structural system to meet the statutory requirement have been demonstrated using the MiC pilot project – InnoCell developed by Hong Kong Science and Technology Park Corporation (HKSTP).
Ir Thomas TONG is the General Manager of Innovation and Technology Development in Construction Industry Council (CIC). He has extensive experience in design of various projects from conception to completion in the United Kingdom and Hong Kong, as well as research and development of various modular integrated construction (MiC) systems which adopt advanced construction materials.
Before joining CIC, Ir. TONG was the Technical Director of one of the world’s leading engineering professional services firms and had been one of the delegates in the firm’s global leadership and global technical team. He is a former lead engineer for Hong Kong’s MiC pilot projects and assisted MiC vendors to obtain MiC pre-acceptance applications approved by the Buildings Department (BD).
