Aim

This course is aimed at candidates who are about to sit the Chartered Membership (CM) examination and is run in accordance with the Institution's examination preparation guidelines. It follows a successful format, developed and delivered for the Institution by the speakers over the last twenty years.

The course concentrates on the general principles and techniques that candidates should find useful to successfully complete the examination. Essential examination techniques are demonstrated and past examination questions are used for tutorial work and group discussion.

The general principles are demonstrated through solutions to four actual questions: Bridge, Steel Building, Concrete Building and a “General” Building (giving a comprehensive range of examples).

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, candidates should have a much better understanding of the requirements of the examination and what the examiners expect to see in a full (and thus successful) answer.

Tutors

Peter Gardner gained his early experience with consulting engineers and in the design office of a major design-and-build contractor, and then became a site manager constructing substantial commercial buildings. Subsequently, he moved into academia where he taught structural analysis, structural design, construction management, research methods and construction IT. He was course leader for a range of civil engineering courses including the external examinations of the Engineering Council and became Head of the School of Engineering, Construction and Maritime Science.

He has designed and delivered a variety of preparation courses for the Institution's CM and AM (Associate Membership) examinations for over 30 years, initially for the southern branch of the Institution at Southampton Institute of Higher Education and latterly on behalf of Institution headquarters in London, in addition to bespoke courses in Hong Kong, Canada, the Caribbean and Dubai.

David Lowe had a career in local government design offices working on a range of projects and now works as an independent consultant. He qualified via the mature candidate/AM route.

He has designed and delivered the Institution's CM and AM courses with Dr. Peter Gardner. He is a marking examiner for CM paper and was previously chief examiner, and now marking examiner, for the AM paper.
