Event description

In this livestreamed lecture, renowned masonry arch expert Dr Bill Harvey, of Freyssinet, will discuss the development and testing of ElevArch® - a revolutionary new technique for vertically jacking masonry bridge arches. Dr Harvey will explain the technical difficulties of achieving such an innovative feat.
Network Rail estimates that around 500 masonry arch railway bridges are too low for its electrification programme. They joined forces with Bill to explore cost-effective solutions that would cause the least disruption to the rail environment and prevent further overbridges being demolished in the future.
Freyssinet successfully completed the world’s first ElevArch® masonry bridge arch lift in October 2016. The 161-year-old, 220 tonne masonry arch bridge at Moco Farm in Buckinghamshire was lifted 900mm using ten 50 tonne jacks.
ElevArch® is a patented technique where the arch of a bridge is cut free from its abutments and walls so it can be jacked upwards, enlarging the space beneath.

Dr Bill Harvey began his career working on large steel bridges including Humber. He went on to a career in academia where he began studying masonry bridges. Since 2000 he has worked as an independent consultant and is considered one of the most renowned masonry arch experts.
