Eurocode 7: Geotechnical Design

Outline

The course will present an over view of geotechnical design to Eurocode 7 with a focus on structures (e.g. foundations and wall) using a combination of lectures and worked examples.  By the end of the day, you should be able to:

  • Manage the interaction between geotechnical and structural design
  • Understand the requirements for ground investigations to Eurocode 7 Part 2
  • Prepare Limit State design to Eurocode 7 Part 1 for foundations, walls and slopes etc.
Learning outcomes

Following completion of the course participants will be armed with the following:

  • A refresher of why ground and groundwater matter
  • An understanding of the geotechnical stages of a project in the context of the RIBA stages of work
  • A framework to allow better interaction with geotechnical specialist working on “structural” projects using the Eurocode documents
  • An understanding of the geotechnical design process used in Eurocode 7

Intended for

The course is aimed at practicing structural engineers who want to develop a better understanding of design of foundations and walls to Eurocode 7.  Specifically the course will provide attendees with a clear understanding of the interaction between geotechnical and structural design processes to enable a structural engineer to develop total designs.

It is also relevant to candidates sitting their Institution of Structural Engineers Chartered Membership exam.
