Vibration Serviceability of Engineering Structures


This course introduces applied vibration serviceability. It will cover theory, vibration serviceability design and assessment, structural performance monitoring and vibration mitigation.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, you should be able to:
  • Understand basic terminology used in vibration serviceability
  • Carry out basic vibration serviceability checks of a typical floor structure
  • Understand the process for checking vibration serviceability of footbridges, staircases, grandstands and tall buildings
  • Understand vibration mitigation technologies available for dealing with vibration serviceability problems  


Professor Aleksandar Pavic is an expert in vibration serviceability of slender civil engineering structures that are occupied and dynamically excited by humans. He co-authored and carried out experimental verification of the most advanced worldwide design guidelines on crowd dynamic loading of grandstands, published by The Institution of Structural Engineers in 2008.

Professor Paul Reynolds was appointed Professor of Structural Dynamics and Control at the University of Exeter in May 2013, following many years at the University of Sheffield. His research interests are in advanced technologies for control of vibrations in civil engineering structures, with a focus on active control of human-induced vibrations.

Both are directors of Full Scale Dynamics Ltd., a university spin-off company specialising in commercial testing, monitoring and performance assessment of full-scale civil engineering structures.

Intended for

Civil and structural engineers dealing with problems of building and structural vibration, including floors, footbridges, stadia and tall buildings.

Entry criteria

Basic structural dynamics, Fourier analysis and matrix calculations.
