Understanding Structural Behaviour (Glasgow)

Aim

This course addresses a deficiency amongst younger engineers to adopt an undue reliance on the use of the computer for analysis and design, without an ability to arrive at an approximate analysis to both create the structure and check the computer results.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • Apply a qualitative approach to the solution of a range of framed structures
  • Apply checking protocols for computer output and establish a reliable interpretation of the results
  • Apply the qualitative approach to the approximate analysis of structures as an aid to the creation of the structural model
  • Determine appropriate protocols for the development of these skills in the design office

Tutor

Dr David Brohn CEng FIStructE teaches structural engineering in the UK and internationally. He was awarded The Institution of Structural Engineers President’s Award, in recognition of his visionary approach to the education of students and graduates in structural engineering.

David pioneered the ‘Brohn Test’ in the early 1970s, leading the way in evidence-based tracking of levels of understanding of structural behaviour amongst graduates. The test is used by educators and employers across the UK to measure and embed an understanding of structural behaviour in students and employees, and his experience and insight underpins this course.

Intended for

Recent graduates from BEng or MEng courses. As the course is non-numerical, it will also be of interest to those from other construction disciplines who wish to obtain a basic introduction to structural engineering.
