This course introduces fundamental vibrations theory.
By the end of the course, you should be able to:
- Understand the key background theory used in vibration serviceability design and assessment
- Understand the theoretical background of vibration testing and signal analysis
Professor Aleksandar Pavic is an expert in vibration serviceability of slender civil engineering structures that are occupied and dynamically excited by humans. He co-authored and carried out experimental verification of the most advanced worldwide design guidelines on crowd dynamic loading of grandstands, published by The Institution of Structural Engineers in 2008.
Professor Paul Reynolds was appointed Professor of Structural Dynamics and Control at the University of Exeter in May 2013, following many years at the University of Sheffield. His research interests are in advanced technologies for control of vibrations in civil engineering structures, with a focus on active control of human-induced vibrations.
Both are directors of Full Scale Dynamics Ltd., a university spin-off company specialising in commercial testing, monitoring and performance assessment of full-scale civil engineering structures.
Civil and structural engineers dealing with problems of building and structural vibration, including the following specific types of structures: buildings, footbridges, and stadia.
This course is recommended for those relatively new to the field of structural vibrations and who need to build their understanding of vibration theory.
Knowledge of matrix calculations, solution of 2nd order differential equations, complex numbers and functions, Fourier series, basics of finite element analysis.
