Globally Responsible Engineering

Aim

This course explains how engineers are vital to achieving global human development by exploring the concept of globally responsible engineering. Using case studies from Engineers Without Borders UK, participants will identify the implications of their own work and reflect on their wider role as an engineer.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • Evaluate the impact of globally responsible engineering, and the impact of your own role on, global human development
  • Describe how engineering is linked to human progress and development
  • Assess, using examples taken from Engineers Without Borders UK’s international portfolio, how ‘context’ plays a significant role in engineering design and operation
  • Propose how this model can be applied elsewhere

Tutor

At Engineers Without Borders UK, we believe people everywhere should be able to enjoy the benefits of engineering and live happy, healthy lives. For the past 13 years we have brought people, ideas and engineering together to respond to the complex challenges that we face as a global community. We work at all levels of education in the UK, inspiring young people with the social impact of engineering and transforming the country's approach to engineering education. We also run engineering projects in Africa, Asia and Latin America, to address the global imbalance of engineering skills. To date, we have inspired more than 30,000 aspiring engineers in the UK to develop their engineering mindset with global responsibility as their foundation.
