Demolition and Structural Refurbishment

Aim

This course provides guidance on specific aspects of demolition and refurbishment; in particular, aspects of existing constructions from previous generations and the differences compared with new constructions.


Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, you should be able to:
 
  • Compare the differences between refurbishment and new construction
  • Demonstrate an understanding of traditional construction
  • Evaluate practical options for demolition of major buildings
  • Identify specific structural hazards which may occur in demolition
  • Understand temporary structural support methods


Tutor

Charles Treasure is a professional engineer with 40 years’ experience in structural and geotechnical design for both temporary works and permanent works, and in management and co-ordination of the design process. Since 2003, he is an Associate in Wentworth House Partnership.

Charle's expertise was recognised by his presentation of a paper on designing cost-effective temporary works at the 2009 national conference on Deep Basements and Underground Structures.

Charles has been has been designing major temporary works since 1976 and was responsible for temporary works design for the demolition and excavation works for the Shard and London Bridge House, over and adjacent to London Bridge Station. He has also been responsible for complex temporary works design in connection with the redevelopment of London Bridge Station, all requiring full approval from Network Rail.


Intended for

Design engineers with a reasonable level of experience. However, it will be of use to all concerned with demolition and refurbishment, including contractors, client managers and advisors.


Entry criteria

The course is designed to cover specific engineering topics, and therefore will be of maximum benefit to those with a reasonable level of experience in construction. However, there are no minimum requirements for attending or benefitting from this course.
