Wind Loading on Structures to EN 1991-1-4

This course introduces EN 1991-1-4, determination of wind velocity and wind actions, and determination of external and internal pressure coefficients on building structures.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, you should be able to:
  • Describe the basic principles of EN 1991-1-4
  • Determine site-specific wind data for a site in the UK
  • Determine the design wind loads on a typical building structure and its cladding

John Owen is an Associate Professor at the University of Nottingham, where he has taught structural analysis and design for 24 years. He has research interests in wind engineering and structural dynamics and has also done research on tubular structures and structural health monitoring.

John served as Head of the Department of Civil Engineering at Nottingham for five years from 2009-2014.  He was also Chair of the UK Wind Engineering Society from 2009-2012 and Chair of the Association of Civil Engineering Departments for 2014-2015. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, a Member of the Institute of Physics and a chartered engineer. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Fellow of the Wind Engineering Society.

Intended for

Recently graduated civil and structural engineers who wish to study wind effects on structures in greater detail.

Entry criteria

Participants should have a degree in civil or structural engineering.

The Dynamic Response of Wind-Excited Flexible Structures course is being run the day after on the 21 September 2018 a discount is available if both courses are booked together.

If we have not received enough bookings to break even one month before the date of the course, we will have to cancel it. So if you are interested, please don’t delay booking your place.
