NEW - How Old Buildings Work

Aim

This course is an introduction to the engineering of existing structures, using case studies relating to recent work on buildings such as St Paul’s Cathedral and Somerset House, London.


Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, you should be able to:
 
  • Appreciate the implications of the philosophy of historic building conservation for engineers
  • Understand the respective roles of conservation architects and structural engineers
  • Identify the types of engineering problems that may affect historic structures
  • Propose ways such problems could be addressed
  • Work towards sustainable adaptations and solutions that protect the authenticity of historic structures


Tutors

Dr William Filmer-Sankey is a senior director of Alan Baxter Ltd, a multidisciplinary design consultancy. William is an architectural historian and archaeologist, responsible for historical research and analysis on major projects involving structural interventions in historic buildings, infrastructure and landscapes. He is a Member of the Institute for Archaeologists and the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS).
