This course introduces the UK fire regulatory framework.
By the end of the course, you should be able to:
- Differentiate between the legal fire requirements for buildings versus the recommendations set out in guidance
- Distinguish between a simple and common building, including how fire resilience solutions might be developed for the two cases
- Recognise the different means and methods by which elements can be analysed and designed to demonstrate that they achieve the required fire resistance
- Identify the benefits of performance-based design, when it can or should be used, and the typical processes that are involved in arriving at solutions
- Recognise the importance of effective specification of fire protection solutions to ensure that structures are realised as intended
Dr Danny Hopkin is a leading figure in the field of structural fire engineering, where he has authored in excess of 30 peer reviewed publications. He holds visiting lecturer positions at the Universities of Sheffield and Leeds, covering the fire performance of composite structures and fire dynamics respectively.
Professor Ian Burgess has developed numerical techniques for modelling the behaviour of steel and composite elements in fire. He has also developed a finite element approach (VULCAN) with an interactive graphical interface. This is now being used in performance-based design of fire protection strategies by leading UK consultants.
Engineers responsible for ensuring that adequate structural performance in fire is achieved. Some content may be beneficial to architects, cost consultants and quantity surveyors.
Awareness of the content of BS EN 1992-1-2, BS EN 1993-1-2, BS EN 1994-1-2 and BS EN 1995-1-2 would be highly beneficial.
