Understanding an existing structure is the starting point to any reuse or retrofit project. Effective assessment, investigation and appraisal are critical to evaluating and justifying the continued use of an existing building. Structural engineers therefore play a critical role in making the case for, and breaking down the barriers to, the transformation of more existing building stock in place of new build. Through sessions aligned with Plan of Work stages 0 - 2 the conference programme will address:
Justifying investigations
Establishing feasibility
Assessment methods, tools and techniques
Making early design decisions
Dealing with risk
Grace Di Benedetto BEng is a structural engineer from Arup, based in the Building Engineering group in London. She advocates for low-carbon design and material reuse on her projects and is on the leadership team for Arup’s Structural Engineering Sustainability Hub UK.

This one-day online course introduces timber as an engineering material, with a focus on its use in historic structures. It covers non-destructive techniques for condition assessment and strategies for the reuse of heritage structures.
A technical lecture sharing guidance on how to recognise RAAC and assess risks.
This two-day, online course introduces seismic design of civil engineering structures. It builds on the basics of structural dynamics and engineering seismology. The course focuses on seismic loading and design codes, conceptual seismic design principles and analysis for seismic loading, and design and detailing of structural members.
This two-day, online course extends the principles developed in the Understanding Structural Behaviour course. It covers more complex real structures and failures; and the important skills of approximate analysis for checking computer output and member sizing.
The fourth of the History Study Group's autumn lecture series, celebrating it's 50th anniversary, explores a history of experiments in how scale, structure, and material were used to shape acoustic environments.
Join this hybrid conference to hear what the UK structural engineering community is doing to increase climate action in their firms and to learn what you can do to positively address the climate and biodiversity emergency.
This practical course will help structural engineers to confidently approach a refurbishment or reuse project. Looking at the initial steps needed to understand an existing structure, how to apply basic conservation principles and the design implications and considerations.
This course takes place as a series of two-hour interactive sessions over three weeks. It introduces EN 1991-1-4 for determining wind actions on structures, outlines the basic principles behind the code and covers each step of the procedure for calculating the wind loads on structures. Attention is given to important features introduced by the UK NA.
This one-day, online, practical course introduces timber connections in detail and several other advanced topics in timber design to Eurocode 5.
