This lecture explores lean structural design, how to challenge a brief to reduce embodied carbon, and low-carbon structural innovation.

Reducing structural embodied carbon is a crucial step towards achieving the 2030 net-zero targets and beyond, and structural engineers need to approach design differently.

This lecture explores several methods to reduce embodied carbon in design, including:

  • Retrofit and donor buildings

  • Deviation from design codes

  • Material innovation

  • Low-carbon procurement

  • Lean structural design

  • Challenging the brief

Reasons to attend

  • Gain an appreciation for retrofitting and an understanding of the possibilities inherent in using donor buildings

  • Understand ways to challenge the design brief

  • Hear case studies highlighting how embodied carbon reduction has been achieved to date

Intended for

  • Structural engineers from practices of all sizes, wishing to gain an understanding and an appreciation for reducing embodied carbon

Speakers

Ryan Daniell Senior Structural Engineer, Civic Engineers

Ryan has worked as a part of various design and construction teams to deliver projects for private investors, developers, local authorities, and government agencies. After having spent over three years at AKT II, Ryan joined the thriving team at Civic Engineers in 2021. Ryan is a member of the Low Carbon and Sustainability Team at Civic Engineers and is a passionate advocate of using drawing and sketching to explore and develop ideas to find creative solutions to problems.

Oscar White Structural Design Engineer, Civic Engineers

Oscar is a structural design engineer with 4 years design experience, also at Civic Engineers. He is currently working towards chartership with the IStructE. and has experience delivering projects at all RIBA design stages. These projects have spanned commercial, residential, industrial, education, refurbishment, and sculpture.
