Join this hybrid paper launch event to hear from the authors of this paper outlining how to use GGBS in order to reduce global emissions.

Ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) has been used in concrete around the world since the end of the nineteenth century due to its technical properties. In recent years, the idea that GGBS can be used as a substitute for carbon-intensive Portland cement in concrete to reduce emissions has gained traction.

To help to determine whether this idea has merit, a group of experts drawn from across the concrete and cement industry, construction, academia and civil society undertook a literature review to better understand global production and utilisation of GGBS and clinker, and how this balance could change in the near-future.

This launch event, will summarise the work undertaken by these experts in the paper. The speakers, drawn from authors of the paper, will outline the global availability of GGBS, advise on how best to use the available supply, and comment on what this means for concrete specifiers and suppliers.

Reasons to attend

  • Understand the global availability of GGBS

  • Learn the impacts of over-specifying GGBS

  • Inform your approach to specifying concrete in order to reduce global emissions

Intended for

The lecture is open to anyone and may be of particular interest to:

  • Structural engineers

  • Contractors

  • Supply chain

  • Clients who are looking to use lower carbon concretes on their projects

Speakers

Will Arnold leads the Institution’s response to the climate emergency, bringing this action into all aspects of the organisations work, including the publication of best practice emergency guidance. Prior to his current role, he was a practising structural engineer at Arup for over ten years. He sits on the Structural Awards judging panel and is a member of the Editorial Advisory Group for The Structural Engineer.

Mike de Silva Head of Sustainability, Clancy

Mike is a sustainability professional with over 30 years’ experience in the construction industry, having worked on major infrastructure projects in the UK and abroad. In recent years he has been actively involved in addressing issues of decarbonisation in the industry and developed the carbon reduction plans for two major companies. Materials decarbonisation has formed a key part of his work and he has been supporting Climate Group with the Concrete Zero commitment.
