This webinar explores the best practices associated with using duplex stainless steels for structures and the sustainability and business benefits of adopting these grades in construction.

By showcasing both material attributes and real projects, this webinar will demonstrate the business benefits and sustainability implications of utilising duplex stainless steels in construction.

With a prospected 125 years of very low or maintenance-free life and reduced demand for composite materials, when utilised appropriately, the selective use of duplex stainless steels may reduce costs to the whole life of a project. Indeed these stainless steel grades offer more sustainable features than are generally understood.

Drawing on their experience, the speakers share best practices and how to overcome common challenges associated with implementing this often misunderstood and perhaps forgotten material family in projects.

Reasons to attend

  • Discover the key attributes and relative costs associated with using Duplex stainless steels
  • Understand when to use Duplex stainless steels and the positive impact they can have on the life-cycle emissions
  • Understand the Eurocode-based design guidance available to use Duplex Stainless Steels.
  • Hear how Duplex Stainless Steels were implemented in a ‘real life’ case study

Intended for

  • Design and construction engineers
  • Architects and material specifiers
  • Finance heads

Speakers

Tim Collins Secretary-General, World Stainless Steel Association

Tim is a metallurgist and supply chain professional who worked across Europe in senior technical, supply chain and operational roles for leading stainless steel production company Outokumpu for 39 years. Tim’s specialisms are aligned to the reliable production of duplex, other precision alloyed stainless steels and the development of lean manufacturing systems in V-plants. He took up his current role as Secretary-General of worldstainless in August 2019.

Nancy Baddoo Associate Director, Steel Construction Institute

Nancy Baddoo is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers. She has worked on many research projects studying the structural performance of high performance steels, as well as being active in writing design standards and disseminating design guidance through publications and seminars. For the last 12 years she has chaired the European technical committee responsible for the stainless steel Eurocode. She is a member of the AISC Committee on Structural Stainless Steel and played a key role in drafting AISC 370-21, AISC’s new stainless steel design standard.

Gragam Gedge Director, Materials, Arup

Graham is a metallurgist with over 35 years experience in durability risk assessment, mitigation, and research. His experience is across the built environment including buildings, bridges, tunnels, water and energy sectors. He has worked on many projects using stainless steels including Stonecutters Bridge, Hong Kong, The Helix, Singapore and The Christopher Cassaniti Bridge, Sydney. He has contributed to stainless steel guidance, undertaken collaborative research with the stainless industry and contributed to the materials section of EN 1993-1-4.
