Advance your transfer slab design skills with a focus on shear assessment, the latest Eurocode guidelines, and detailing practices for safer, compliant designs

Building upon our foundational webinar, this session will dive deeper into the critical components of transfer slab design, highlighting the challenges and solutions related to shear assessment. We will address the limitations of traditional methods, pivot towards advanced techniques, and discuss the implications of the new Eurocode 2.23 standards.

Our industry experts will provide actionable insights into optimising column offsets, applying rigorous methodologies, and executing precise detailing to achieve structural integrity. The webinar will meticulously cover four critical areas:

  • Column offsets: analyse their influence on shear assessments to optimise design.

  • Navigate the latest advancements in transfer slab design for enhanced methodologies and practices.

  • Eurocode 2.23: decode the impact and application of Eurocode 2.23 on your design processes.

  • Detailing for integrity: strategies to avoid common pitfalls for more robust designs.

Reason to attend

  • Understand the new approach to shear design.

  • Identify which shear assessment method to adopt.

  • Carry out shear design of a transfer slab.

Who should attend

  • Those involved in design, checking and construction of concrete buildings with transfer slabs.

  • Practicing and chartered engineers.

This webinar is part of a series. The first webinar "Transfer slabs: getting it right from the start" will take place Tuesday 22 October.

Speakers

Robert Vollum Professor of Structural Concrete, Imperial College

Robert began his career as a structural engineer with Arup Associates before pursuing an MSc in Structural Steel Design at Imperial College in 1986-87. He then worked at Ove Arup and Partners before returning to Imperial in 1991 as a lecturer in reinforced concrete design. During this time, he earned a PhD focused on reinforced concrete beam column joints. Robert was promoted to senior lecturer in 2003, reader in 2011, and professor in 2020. His research interests include reinforced concrete design, shear, and reinforcement detailing, contributing significantly to the next generation of Eurocode 2. His recent research has focused on developing numerical methods for modeling punching shear failure in flat slabs. Robert is a chartered civil engineer and a member of the Institution of Structural Engineers. He serves on the BSI Committee 525/2, the UK National Annex Committee for Eurocode 2, and represents the UK on various international technical groups. Additionally, he is on the editorial boards of several prestigious journals in the field.

Chair: Emily Halliwell Senior Structural Engineer, The Concrete Centre

Emily a chartered structural and civil engineer with over 10 years’ experience within the construction industry. Her role includes sharing best practice for the design of concrete buildings, providing technical guidance to designers and specifiers and contributing to the development of codes and standards. Emily is also a chartered environmentalist and with a focus on promoting material efficient and sustainable concrete designs. Prior to joining The Concrete Centre, she worked on a wide range of challenging engineering schemes, including stations, stadia and commercial buildings.
