This technical lecture explores the dynamic performance of floors as we strive to use more sustainable solutions on the road to Net-zero design.

As designers facing the climate emergency, our goal is to minimise the embodied carbon in our solutions.  This can involve using new, lighter, eco-friendly materials or using less of traditional materials. However, how does this approach impact the performance of our buildings?

This lecture focusses on how ‘using less’ can change the design focus so that performance under dynamic loading, for example walking, becomes the governing design criteria.

The following topics will be covered in this lecture:

  • Brief introduction to current design methods for the dynamic performance of floors

  • How current guidance sits with lighter weight solutions

  • Case studies of lower carbon structures

Speakers

Camila Ribellato Structural Engineer, Buro Happold

Camila has extensive experience in structural design for a variety of construction projects, ranging from small to large and complex, with a focus on concrete and timber. She specialises in wind design for high-rise buildings, including studies on vortex-induced vibration and lateral acceleration criteria. Additionally, she conducts dynamic analysis of light timber floors, providing verification and recommendations for optimal solutions.

Gillian Browning Head of Structural Dynamics, Buro Happold

Gillian, a Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers, has dedicated the past 20 years to specialising in the design of structures subjected to dynamic loading. Her extensive portfolio includes large stadia, performance venues, commercial and residential projects, as well as low vibration laboratories and research facilities. She chairs the ISE technical panel for Seismic and Dynamic Events and is actively involved in the working group revising the ISE publication on the dynamic performance of grandstands. Gillian is passionate about improving vibration serviceability design to facilitate effective low carbon building solutions.

Will Pearn Associate, Buro Happold

Will brings over a decade of experience in the engineering industry, having worked across diverse sectors. He has significant expertise in the design, assembly, and fabrication of special structures, such as art pieces, theatres, and sculptures, often utilizing innovative materials. Alongside his work on special structures, Will is also proficient in conventional building structures, delivering projects from concept to construction.
