This course reviews the historic use of post-tensioning in buildings, and examines types of systems, basic design principals, TR43 approach, best practice and detailing.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • Scheme a post-tensioned beam or slab structure with realistic outcomes
  • Perform simple detailed design
  • Provide simple detailing intent for drafting


Intended for

Graduates through to Chartered Structural Engineers who wish to improve or enhance their knowledge of post-tensioned building design.

Entry criteria

None. However, a familiarity with The Concrete Society’s Technical Report 43 would be useful.

Tutor

Matthew Gilliver

Matthew Gilliver has 16 years’ experience in the design of structures, including post-tensioning. He is the Technical Director of CCL (Europe), where he was responsible for the delivery of post-tensioned projects such as Strata and St George’s Tower in London and the New Engineering Building at the University of Sheffield. Matthew contributed to the Post-Tensioning Association (PTA) series of guidance notes and is the current Chair of the PTA Technical Committee.
