This course will cover the most recent available guidance published by The Institution of Structural Engineers on temporary demountable structures (TDS).

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • Identify the legislation and codes  of practice related to the design of temporary demountable structures in the UK
  • Distinguish the key structural principles behind different types of temporary demountable structures, eg stages, platforms, marquees and tensile structures, grandstands and ancillary performance related structures (external screens, PA supports, etc).
  • Understand the design criteria for temporary structures, including  wind management
  •  Identify good (and bad) industry practice

Tutor

Abigail Matthews

Abigail has been working as a structural engineer since 1991 and co-founded Momentum Consulting Engineers in 2005. She has been involved in the design and inspection of TDS for the events and entertainment industry for most of her career. Abigail represents the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Professional Lighting and Sound Association on the Advisory Group for Temporary Structures. She also represents the UK in the development of new European standards for temporary structures and demountable seating.
