This course provides participants with an overview of the design procedures in BS EN 1996-1-1 and the required supporting documents.

This course will include tutorial sessions during which design examples will be tackled by the participants.

Course description

This course is aimed at designers requiring more detailed knowledge of masonry design to Eurocode 6.

  • Overview of masonry design to Eurocode 6 (BS EN 1996-1-1)

  • Vertical load design and tutorial

  • Lateral load design and tutorial

  • Eurocode 6 parts 1-2, 2 and 3 (BS EN 1996-1.2, BS EN 1996-2 and BS EN 1996-3)

  • PD 6697: Recommendations for the design of masonry structures to BS EN 1996-1-1 and BS EN 1996-2.

Speaker

Professor John Roberts FIStructE is the Principal of the Technical Innovation Consultancy and Emeritus Professor of Civil Engineering – Kingston University. He is a civil engineering graduate of London University, where he also studied for his PhD.

He is co-author of the Concrete Masonry Designer's Handbook, the Handbook to BS 5628: Part 2, Efficient Masonry Housebuilding Design Approach, Efficient Masonry Housebuilding Detailing Approach and the Design Guide for Eurocode 6. He has published over 130 papers relating to various aspects of masonry design and construction and was awarded the Henry Adams Bronze Medal by the Institution of Structural Engineers for a paper on masonry design.

John has extensive experience of work on British Standards and Codes of Practice, and currently chairs or is a member of several committees involved in the development of the European Standards. He is a past President of the British Masonry Society.

John works extensively as an Expert Witness, is a CEDR accredited mediator and has participated in mediations to resolve construction, property, software and other technical disputes.
