This presentation will provide an introduction to the principle considerations in designing and investigating basements, considering structural, geotechnical, construction and waterproofing aspects.

John Read will give a brief overview of key aspects to consider when discussing with clients.

Covering the main industry references that are available, and the key challenges that arise when looking at solutions that will fulfil the waterproofing, architectural, geotechnical and structural aspects of basement construction.

John will refer to experience gained from designing and advising on basements as well as discussing lessons learned from investigating defects and failures.

John Read, Associate Director, Arup

John leads the Arup office in Nottingham. He has 32 years’ experience with Arup, in London, Newcastle and Nottingham with international experience on Arup projects in Bangkok, Botswana, Dubai, Hong Kong, Istanbul, Poland and Scandinavia.

John is a Chartered Civil and Structural Engineer with extensive experience across a wide range of sectors and building types, including design, technical appraisal and expert witness work involving all structural materials, with particular areas of interest in ground bearing slabs and basements.

Some of the projects he has worked on include Bishops Square London, The Imperial War Museum – North, Nottingham Girls High School Theatre, The National Ice Centre, South Leicester College, Glenrothes and Kirkcaldy leisure centres, Derby Arena and Cripps Medical Centre at University of Nottingham

John provides advice on basement construction within Arup, and for a number of years has provided in house training to Arup staff on basements.
