Damian Friel of Arup will give a lecture on the structural engineering challenges presented by the world's tallest statue.

The Statue of Unity is an iconic 182m tall landmark dedicated to Sardar Patel. Completed in 2018 at a cost of £300 million, it is the world’s tallest statue. 

The project was a winner in the Midland Counties Regional Group Awards in 2018.

Arup were civil and structural engineers, which, as well as the statue structure, included the design of its bronze façade, an exhibition centre and vehicle bridge. Off-site fabrication was utilised to achieve an economic, fast track solution.

Damian Friel will discuss the structural engineering challenges this complex and massive project presented. These included overcoming ground conditions that comprised highly fractured rock and geological faults, and significant seismic and wind loading, which were resisted by two 200 tonne tuned mass dampers.

Speaker

Damian Friel works in the multi-disciplinary building engineering group at the Arup Campus, Solihull. He has managed multi disciplinary engineering design teams for both new build and refurbishment projects. He has an in-depth knowledge of structural design in all materials and construction forms including stadia, leisure centres, and low and high rise residential projects.

Damian's current designs include HS2's Interchange Station and the new commonwealth swimming pool for 2022.
