Located at the end of The Mall, connecting Buckingham Palace with Trafalgar Square, the Admiralty Arch is one of London’s most iconic buildings. As part of redevelopment efforts to convert this Grade 1 listed building into a Waldorf Astoria Hotel, Residences and Private Members’ Club, WSP was engaged to provide structural and geotechnical engineering for two new basements, housing a ballroom, spa, and swimming pool.
The project presented significant design challenges to accommodate two underground tunnels running under the building, as well as requiring that the roads remain open to traffic throughout construction.
Diego Padilla Philipps, Associate Director, WSP
Diego’s experience varies from tall building design to complex basements, from office refurbishments to luxury hotels. He was the lead engineer for the design and delivery of 22 Bishopsgate, and he is currently delivering the new basement extension under the Admiralty Arch in London and the design of a skyscraper in Tel Aviv.
Diego is also coordinating the delivery of the UK Holocaust Memorial and Learning Centre and a cultural building in the UAE. Working alongside some of the biggest names in architecture, he manages an international team of engineers who provide beautiful and efficient design solutions to complex engineering and architectural challenges.
He also runs WSP Design Studio, including projects like Tetra Hotel and the UK Pavilion finalist for Dubai 2020 Expo. He is currently providing a structural solution to prop the famous Allerton Oak in Liverpool, a 1000 years old tree at risk of collapse.
Diego is a UK Net Zero champion, leading WSP’s efforts towards creating zero carbon buildings and addressing the climate emergency. He is a founding member of our Diversity and Inclusion network and an enthusiastic architectural photographer.
