The course will be held online on Wednesday 23 October from 13:00 - 17:00 and will build on embodied carbon basics to look at applications of the theory, in order to identify ways to reduce carbon on projects.
The course will be delivered by Will Arnold, Head of Climate Action at the IStructE.
Will leads the Institution’s response to the climate emergency, bringing this action into all aspects of the organisation's work including the publication of best practice emergency guidance. Prior to his current role, he was a practising structural engineer at Arup for over ten years. He sits on the Structural Awards judging panel and is a member of the Editorial Advisory Group for The Structural Engineer.
Module 1
The big picture - What is the relevance to structural engineering of wider concepts such as the UN SDGs, doughnut economics, key COP agreements, and ‘the paradigm shift’?
Module 2
Design process - How does the IStructE Net Zero Hierarchy apply to engineering practice?
Module 3
Decarbonising materials - What are the limitations of materials on net zero design?
Module 4
Quick carbon - How can you use the knowledge gained in embodied carbon basics to enable you to quickly assess the carbon impact of our decisions?
Please note that completion of the ‘Embodied carbon basics for structural engineers on-demand’ course is a compulsory prerequisite for anyone wishing to attend. This is an online course that is free for IStructE members and takes around four hours to complete, but split across multiple short modules that can be completed in stages.
