Chartered Engineers Pacific - China's Engineers: from Li Bing (3rd Century B.C.) to today

Li Bin designed the flood prevention/irrigation system at Dujiangyan in the 3rd Century B.C. It is still in use today. It is one of China’s greatest engineering projects. It was followed by the Great Wall, the Yellow River dykes, the Grand Canal and many other mega-projects.

in the Far West of China, the Turfan irrigation system has turned desert in to a rich fruit growing area. In recent times huge dams have been built, an extensive rail system built, and artificial islands constructed in the South China Sea. Despite this engineering brilliance, no later engineer has achieved the fame that came to Li Bin. I will discuss the role of engineers in Chinese history and present.
