Welsh International Convention Centre

The Welsh International Convention Centre (WICC) will be a state-of-the-art auditorium with fixed seating for 1500 delegates, with an atrium providing a 4000 sqm column free main hall. In addition, networking spaces and 2500 sqm of plaza space for outdoor exhibitors are being constructed over a multi storey car park.

The objective of the project was to find a substructure solution that not only provided significant economic benefits but also help simplify complex site logistics.

Given the footprint of the building there was extensive piling and although this was a viable technique it was deemed too costly and time consuming for construction. The solution was also hindered by site constraints.

During the tendering process EDGE highlighted that although the ground was not suitable for a traditional RC raft it could be possible to change the piled solution into a post-tensioned raft.

The savings generated from the proposal not only saved costs in the substructure itself but also reduced the volume of reduced level dig and the speed of construction.

This rare form of construction in the UK proved to be at the forefront of innovation and design for a substructure solution, demonstrating significant value economically and environmentally in comparison to more commonly adopted methods.
