Chief Executive's Visit and Technical Meeting on Chernobyl - New Safe Confinement

Martin Powell, Chief Executive, of IStructE will open the evening's meeting with an update from headquarters.

Our technical speaker, Philip Nelson is a Chartered Structural and Civil Engineer with over 30 years experience in the Nuclear Industry. He currently works for Nuvia Ltd as Engineering Manager and is responsible for technical delivery, resourcing and staff development of over 70 Engineers.

In 1986, reactor number four at Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded leaking radioactive material into the atmosphere. In response, a “sarcophagus” was constructed under a huge arch to prevent water and snow seeping into the site and dust dispersing from it.

The New Safe Confinement is an extraordinary feat of engineering and will offer a long lasting defence against radioactive leakage. Completed in 2017, the structure encloses the remains of reactor number four and the “sarcophagus”, making it large enough to house the Statue of Liberty.

Phil’s talk will cover the background to the disaster, and address the construction methodology based on the environment and remains of the plant.
