Technical Talk: Manhattan Loft Gardens, Stratford, E20

The Manhattan Loft Garden tower structure is an unusual 42 story residential tower-structure in that the majority of the floors are supported by a cantilevered post-tensioned concrete outrigger + steel truss system that permitted removal of half the columns at two locations in the building. The structural design is unique and had to overcome unusual challenges related to the sequencing of the build - the design of the tower required a collaborative approach between the contractor and structural designers to analyse and consider the build and post-tensioning sequence which largely controlled the design. The entire build-sequence of the tower was analysed step-by-step in time. Speciality topics of interest include large post-tensioned element is in buildings, sequential analysis, and temporary conditions.
