Development of the Eurocodes with particular reference to the Masonry Eurocode, EN 1996

The European Commission has mandated CEN to develop, improve and extend the Eurocodes to make them fit for the next Generation, and in particular to concentrate on user friendliness. The talk will cover the work that has been, and is, going on in CEN to satisfy that mandate.

For October 2018 we are pleased to present Barry Heseltine MBE as our technical meeting speaker.

Barry is the leader of the UK delegation to the main Technical Committee that is responsible for all of the Eurocodes and is the Chairman of the working group that is revising EN 1996-1-1; he also chairs the BSI committee on masonry. The talk will give an insight into the way that the revisions are being handled, particularly referring to EN1990, the overall code for Structural Design, and EN 1996, the masonry one. The timetable for the publication of revised Eurocodes is slipping, but the masonry one and a few of the others should appear in 1 to 2 years time.

Barry has an engineering career spanning 60 years and is an international authority on masonry construction in bricks and concrete blocks. As well as author of numerous technical papers and books in the masonry field, he also wide ranging experience and interests in concrete, ceramics and energy use.
