Scottish Regional Group Young Members' Group - Failures and the Law of Unintended Consequences

Speaker:
Stewart Macartney

Stewart will give a talk on some of the failures he has investigated and will discuss the reasons and causes, along with some of the lessons that can be learned when things go wrong.

As the technical advisor to; and a member of the Independent Inquiry Panels on the Edinburgh Schools Inquiry and recent DG1 Inquiry, he will also cover some of the issues that arose from these two cases and look at the consequences of decisions or actions taken; intended or otherwise.

Stewart is a Director with Blyth & Blyth, and as well as undertaking investigation work, he is also involved in mainstream structural engineering. Recent high-profile projects include the multi award winning Dalmunach Distillery and award-winning Aberdeen Standard Life HQ building at 3-8 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh. He has also engineered numerous large public art works sculptures with pieces being installed in London, Belfast, Dubai, Dallas, Venice, Singapore and Lagos. One of his recent sculptures won a Saltire Award in the Permanent Art Installation Category.
