CPD Seminar: Concept Design

This seminar provides a theoretical framework for understanding conceptual design in the context of structural engineering. It will include understanding the overall process of design, where conceptual design fits within the process, how to interpret a client brief, strategies for generating ideas in response to a brief, and rapid, iterative modelling and testing of ideas.
14.30:  Registration
15.00:  Practical Concept Design – Willie Crowe
This paper will cover quick methods of design for costing. Covering: foundations including piles and basements, slabs, beams, transfer structures, trusses, frames, stability systems, plate action and simple calculations to size these elements for costing. Principal materials to be covered will be steel and concrete.
The paper is aimed at candidates preparing for the CM exam and engineers looking to improve there working knowledge of effective concept design.

16:00:  How to have ideas – Oliver Broadbent
Idea generation is an important but not-often-talked about part of an engineer’s art. In this paper, Oliver present systematic approach for integrating idea generation into an engineer’s workflow. He will present a simple model for understanding how we have ideas and practical tools for introducing more creative thinking into conceptual design. While the material is suitable for engineers with all levels of experience Oliver will identify tools that could be used to help prepare for the CM exam.

16:30:  Break

17.00:  How to have ideas –  continued

17.30:  An Insight into Structural Design against Deflection – Dr Tianjian Ji
There are “rules of thumb” for designing structural elements, such as beams and columns, which are simple and effective. Are there similar “rules of thumb” that can be used for conceptual designs to achieve smaller deflection of whole structures? This presentation will demonstrate four conceptual solutions to reduce deflections of structures through achieving desirable internal forces. Examples are provided to illustrate the use and effectiveness of the concepts.

18.30:  Q and A
