One-Day Seminar on Structural Vibration: Theory, Design, Testing and Validation

This one-day course introduces participants to structural vibration, their effects and implications in engineering analysis, design and testing. Following testing, validation provides greater confidence in the use of mathematical and physical modelling processes. In this way, engineers develop greater assurance of their ability to appreciate the response of structures subjected to conventional dynamic loading. Dynamic loads are modelled as deterministic time series (e.g. footfalls) and stochastic process (e.g. wind load) and these are discussed in the course. Understanding structural vibration is also a pre-requisite in determining the response of structures subjected to much shorter duration loading, though this will be discussed in another course.

Important concepts and their relevance in structural vibration design and mitigation will be emphasised and illustrated with practical examples. Field dynamic testing will also be discussed, where modern advances in sensing and analysis algorithms allow the in-situ properties of structures to be identified economically, mitigating uncertainties in project assessments and improving modelling capabilities in the long run.
