Southern Regional Group - AGM followed by a talk on Bridging the Gap - Building a Railway in the Himalayan Foothills

The Southern Regional Group will be holding their Annual General Meeting followed by a talk on Bridging the Gap - Building a Railway in the Himalayan Foothills by David MacKenzie.

The talk will be about the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link which runs through the Indian states of Jammu and Kashmir.  It is no ordinary railway line as it wends its way through the foothills of the Himalayas. In the central 72 km section only 8% of the railway is on grade; the rest of it is in tunnel crossing some spectacular valleys. The most impressive of these valleys are those across the Chenab River and the Anjikhad River.

The Chenab Bridge is particularly impressive and is the size of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Eiffel Tower can fit underneath it. It is a breathtaking piece of engineering that is getting close to completion. COWI are the client's technical advisors for the project.
