An overview of the Building Safety Bill and how it will impact the role structural engineers have in building projects.

At the beginning there will be an AGM for 2021 and this will be followed by a talk on the Building Safety Bill.

Since August 2021, the first component of the Building Safety Bill came into place in the form of Gateway 1 for planning applications for building structures. Since then, Gateway 2 will into force in 2023 will see Gateway 3 be put into place soon after as the buildings that are designed and constructed comply with the requirements of the Building Safety Bill.

This talk discusses how this bill will impact structural engineers and other construction professionals across the industry and advises on what is likely to be put into place in the coming months. Significant changes are occurring in the industry as the questions following the Grenfell Tower disaster have not yet been answered.

Chris O’Regan FIStructE
Chris is an Associate Structural Engineer at Clarke Nicholls Marcel. Chris has been working in the field of structural engineering for over 30 years and has been actively involved in assisting the Institution of Structural Engineers respond to the Building Safety Bill and how the construction industry will change to meet its requirements.

Chris is also the committee's senior vice chair for 2021.
