This online talk will dive into the design and construction of Water Street Bridge. The bridge crosses Bellmouth Passage and connects Canary Wharf with Wood Wharf – multi-billion-pound mixed use development currently under construction.
Opened to the public in January 2020, it is London's newest bascule bridge and the winner of the South Eastern Counties Regional Award for Medium value projects. As minimalist as it may appear, the project involved some very interesting engineering.
Designed by COWI in collaboration with Knight Architects and Eadon Consulting for Canary Wharf Contractors, the bespoke orthotropic steel deck was shipped from Belgium in one piece. The complex east abutment carries two hydraulic cylinders, each capable of producing 6MN of force.
It was partially precast, floated and sunk in place onto a bed of piles, which were bored just metres away from London Underground’s Jubilee Line.

Vlad has particular interest in collaboration with architects and digital engineering. He is a member of South Eastern Counties Regional Group and acting committee member for IStructE London Young Members Group.
