The Surrey Regional Group is once again holding this successful series of evening classes for candidates sitting the Chartered, Associate Membership and AM to CM supplementary exams.

The course will be of immediate benefit to those sitting the examination in the summer of 2022 and to those intending to take the examination in future years.

The course will be run on six successive Wednesday evenings from 18 May to 22 June 2022 between 18.30 and 21.00. With the exception of the first and fourth evenings, the course will be run in two separate groups, one for bridge engineers and one for building structures engineers.

A local engineer’s office will be made available to candidates wishing to attempt a seven-hour question on a Saturday.

Typical Course Programme

1st Evening:
Introduction to the CM, AM and AM-CM examinations. Examiners will talk about the marking procedure and discuss solutions for a past question with candidates.

2nd Evening:
Section 1 of a past paper will be attempted by groups of candidates with assistance from the course leaders.

3rd Evening:
A number of structural details required in past papers will be attempted and discussed with the leader.

4th Evening:
The letter to a client and the method statement from past papers will be attempted and discussed with the leader.

5th Evening:
Section 2 of a past paper will be attempted by groups of candidates with assistance from the course leader.

6th Evening:
A mock two-hour test will be set with a choice of two building structures and one bridge.

The programme for bridge candidates will follow the above with a variety of bridge past papers led by practising Chartered Bridge Engineers.

You will not need any special equipment but please bring pens, notepaper and a calculator. It will be useful to have your reference files filled in with extracts of any specific design guides, codes, load-span tables, material properties, etc. A pad of graph paper will be useful for sketching.

All course leaders and helpers are experienced practising structural engineers drawn from the Surrey Region membership.
