Nello Petrioli and Brandon Eastwood will talk about their work on the design and construction of Principal Tower in London.

A new landmark residential tower has risen where the City meets Shoreditch. At 163m high, the 50-storey Principal Tower is destined to become one of London’s tallest residential buildings and will offer expansive views from Canary Wharf to St Paul’s Cathedral and the Houses of Parliament.

Principal Tower has been designed as part of a mixed-use scheme at Principal Place. The tower’s form and orientation have resulted from precise engineering that has unlocked a site with a series of challenging constraints including archaeology, 19th century gasworks and Victorian railway infrastructure.

This area was deemed critically important as a front entrance both to the residential tower and to the Principal Place commercial building.

The building’s reinforced concrete frame comprises post-tensioned slabs spanning between the central core and perimeter columns. Internal columns have been avoided to maximise layout flexibility.

The structure is also sympathetic to the cladding’s architectural expression. Transfer structures are strategically positioned to move the building columns away from the railway below, which enables the façade to remain constant throughout the height of the building and the building to have an open and expressive feature entrance.
