Dr Mehdi Khabbazan will cover the basics of structural engineering seismology, with a focus on seismically isolated structures.
The fundamental objective for the design of critical structures in earthquake active areas is to reduce the effects of ground shaking on the structures and protect them from damaging. This presentation focuses on development and implementation of advanced, state-of-the art methodologies for seismic isolation of important structures.
The talk begins with an introduction to seismic design concepts and the need for seismic isolation and delivers guidance on seismically isolated structures and their design requirements to ASCE 7-16 and Eurocode 8. Some examples of worldwide important buildings designed and constructed using this approach are presented.
