Ductility is an important requirement for seismic resistant design of structures. Its role and significance in influencing the structure performance are discussed in this talk.
The talk begins with an introduction to the concepts of ductility of materials and structural elements. This will follow of modern seismic resistant design of structures and the need for ductile behaviour of structures in seismic regions. Finally, the ways to achieve this in practice and approaches undertaken by modern seismic design standards are discussed.
