It is Surrey Region’s tradition that one of their technical meeting is dedicated to presentations delivered by young members of the Institution, either students after their gap year, spent in intricate locations internationally working on special construction projects, or nearly fresh graduates, who tested intensive involvement in complex designs alongside with their experienced colleagues.
This year the Young Members Group presenters and their talks will be as follows:
Mukaab Wadi Foundation – QA Role and Design Overview by Cecilia Pan, Assistant Structural Engineer, AtkinsRéalis
The Wadi foundation, spanning a vast 1km x 1km area, posed significant design challenges due to its scale, complexity, the need for collaboration between multiple design teams, and the requirement for an efficient solution within a fast tracked 12-week design delivery programme. This talk will provide an overview of the Wadi foundation design, key challenges encountered, and the value engineering process that led to a reissue of the design.
Downs Park Road Bridge Design and Construction by Mohamed Omar, Civil Design Engineer at Whitfield Consulting Services
This technical talk will explore the engineering complexities and innovative solutions adopted, including value engineering that achieved a 30% cost reduction, constructability planning and trial erection that enabled successful installation within a tight 16-day blockade, and sustainability measures that resulted in a 25% carbon reduction using optimised materials and the Rail Carbon Tool.
Parametrics Unleashed: Smarter Structures, Less Headaches by Niall Conyers, Structural Engineer, Cundall and Konstantinos Agrafiotis, Senior Structural Engineer, Cundall
Two projects will be presented to give examples of how parametric design transformed the structural development of each while ultimately creating better structures with fewer headaches along the way.
