An online technical lecture on structural impact.

Structures can be required to withstand the effects of impact from sources including vehicles, ships, aircraft, rockfalls, wind and tornado generated missiles, dropped loads from cranes, collapsing structures, turbine disintegration, pressure vessel and pipe failure, and interaction with adjacent structures during earthquakes.

This talk will present an overview of the guidance, methods and tools that can be used consider impact loading.

A number of case studies will be presented with a focus on lessons learnt.

Speaker

Andy Rushton, Chief Engineer, Atkins
Andy has worked on structural dynamics problems for over 20 years in a wide range of industries including transportation, process, oil and gas, aerospace, defence, nuclear and renewable energy. He has led many projects involving the analysis, assessment or design of structures to resist impact loading.

Andy is a Chartered Structural Engineer and Chartered Mechanical Engineer, and is Chair of the Western Counties Regional Group in 2021.
