As part of the IStructE Yorkshire region's centenary, this talk celebrates the Humber Bridge, one of the most iconic structures in the region and the world’s longest single-span suspension bridge from the time of its completion in 1981 until 1998.
In a change from our usual format, this hour long talk will be delivered in three parts, kicking off with Brian Kerridge, a site Engineer on the project for six years from November 1974. With the help of 1500+ entries in his site diaries, Brian will be concentrating on the cable spinning process and deck erection programme with a view to explaining the extent and complexity of temporary works.
Next, Peter Campbell from Roughan and O’Donovan Consulting Engineers, will discuss his company's role in the monitoring of, and remedial works design for the bridge in response to damage caused by Storm Ciara in February 2020.
Finally, James Barnes will discuss the work of the Humber Bridge Board, the statutory body responsible for ensuring the running and maintenance of the bridge.
Brian Kerridge
Brian was employed by Redpath Dorman Long from leaving school in 1970 and graduated with honours in civil engineering from the University of Wales, Swansea in 1973. Following employment in the design office in Middlesbrough he was seconded to the British Bridge Builders site team at Hessle in November 1974.
During the following six years Brian was active in all stages of the temporary and permanent works necessary to construct the cables and deck. In October of 1980, with road surfacing commencing, Brian joined the Institute of Steel Structures at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne for a period of three years with a variety of work including fatigue and dynamic testing. Following an MBA at the University of Bradford Brian worked for fabricators, consultants and property developers with a special interest in fire engineering of steel structures in Yorkshire. From 2001, until his retirement in 2013, Brian worked in education in Yorkshire. A native of Cleveland, from an iron and steel family since 1860, he now lives in South-West France.
