Surveying Town Blocks for Rebuilding
The Structural Engineer is called upon from time to time to make a survey of a block of
buildings that it is proposed to pull down to allow of rebuilding with a steel-framed structure. The greatest possible accuracy has to be observed, say to 1/4 inch in 100 ft. A 100 ft. standard steel tape must be used and before commencing it should be checked by the standard marked down on the North Terrace of Trafalgar Square. The exact difference should be noted as well as the temperature.
