Barbican Arts Centre: the Design and Construction of the Substructure

The conditions for the design of the substructure of the Barbican Arts Centre, London, are outlined. The building comprises a large deep basement, andis surrounded by existing buildings, including two tall blocks of dwellings. The problems thereby posed are examined.
